After the introduction of the Porsche Turbo in October 1974, interested customers asked the Porsche AG over and over again to deliver the conventional models also with the breathtaking bodywork of the Turbo.

Test reports and warnings about the unpredictable handling of the "Mega-Porsche" and of course its extremely high purchase price were the reasons for these very understandable requests.

Many tuners and vehicle builders fulfilled the customers wishes for the turbo optics, sometimes, unfortunately, in very questionable quality. Some cars originated in the exclusivity department of Porsche. All these rebuildings have in common that they implied only optical changes, technically everything remained the same.

There are some exceptions of course. The RUF company and, as mentioned, also the Porsche AG, offered a complete rebuild to interested customers.
Everything was going well until Porsche realized increasing emission level requirements would totally exclude the 930 Turbo from being imported into North America beginning in 1980. This couldn’t have come at a worse time. Porsche was cleaning up in Motorsport with victories on every hand. The general public loved the wide muscular look of the iconic Turbo and all too soon, clamoring demanding customers wouldn’t even be able to buy one! This growing problem, coupled with additional revenues being lost to ever-growing numbers of independent shops offering sub-standard Turbo-look-alikes, gave Porsche a reason and an opportunity to capitalize on a growing phenomenon: the 911 Turbo-Look.
But some years should pass until the Porsche AG finally officially built the Turbo Look in Modelyear 1984. The Turbo Look characteristic was the option M491, wich was used before in 1973 to declare the changing of the Carrera RS to the racecar RSR 2,8.

Seen from todays point of view, it is a pity that no extra serial numbers were given to the rare TURBO-LOOK cars, which in Great Britain were called Carrera with Supersport Equipment, later, in 1987, they called the Modell "SUPERSPORT".

Today experts as well as car lovers make a very clear and strict difference between the copies and the factory built cars, which also deviate greatly in their market value.
Converted cars are called Turbolook = TL. The factory built cars are called Factory Turbo Look ( FTL ) or Factory Widebody, In German they are denominated Werksturbolook = WTL , in French Turbo Look Usine.
